It's time again for another great SLP Basement LAN! For those who have never been to a Basement LAN before, they are pretty simmilar to our bigger lans, the difference being that it is held in what is the console room of our big lans, the environment is kept dark (like a basement) and its pretty much free for all gaming the whole time.

We host two fully sponsored lans each year with official tournaments etc in September and February. However for most LANners that is a long time to wait, so a year and a half ago we decided to institute a smaller more cozy interim event that is easy, fun and different.

There will be no sponsors or prizes or official tournaments, its just a show up and play, visit with your fellow SLP'ers and enjoy some pizza on the house (with paid admission of course, which is cheaper than our other LANs if you didn't notice!) We usually have a Got2H (Game of the 2 Hours) at the basement LANs, which specifies in various 2 hour timeframes a particular game, and if you have it then you are encouraged to play it at that time with everyone else. But of course you can do or play whatever you want whenever you want.

So come and hang out with us all at these very fun and relaxed basement LANs! See you there!

On a serious note, I'd totally be up for hosting an unofficial newby-only (I wouldn't play) SC2 beta tournament.

Is this only 9Am-12PM? 3 hour lan? pfffft. (lol...I know this is incorrect, but I majored in education, so here goes:)

Per WIkipedia:

To avoid confusion, the correct designation for twelve o'clock is 12 noon or 12 midnight. Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. The abbreviation a.m. stands for ante-meridiem (before the Sun has crossed the line) and p.m. for post-meridiem (after the Sun has crossed the line). At 12 noon the Sun is at its highest point in the sky and directly over the meridian. It is therefore neither "ante-" nor "post-".[8]

However, as discussed elsewhere in the same reference, the Sun is highest at 12 noon local Solar time, not 12 noon civil time, the difference being given by the equation of time [9] plus the effect of time zones.

In the United States, noon is often called "12:00 p.m." and midnight "12:00 a.m." With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system logical.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic: "Strictly speaking, 12 a.m. denotes midnight, and 12 p.m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required."[10]

Maybe we can get a small LAN going here in A2 and then challenge your teams to some BC2 or L4D2 on our servers in Chicago. =)

So am I correct in assuming that there is no way to run your own bad company 2 server without "renting" one presently? Seems like a horrible idea imo, why would you castrate the dedicated server market by requiring people to rent them. The more servers the better for the gamers as I see it, you should be able to host your own for free if you've got the hardware and the pipe.

The only problem I see with having you host your own servers is that the Server Browser already takes a long long to find servers as is. Also, even back in the days of Battlefield 2, I don't even remember if there was an option for hosting a dedicated server.

I am a bit confused though by your comment about renting. When have servers ever been free for clans? For the longest time, i've always seen "donate to reserve your slot" on random clan servers and such, indicating that they are paying for the server.

Some groups (us for example) have their own dedicated servers to host game servers on. In that situation you wouldn't be paying for the server on a monthly basis like that, just the initial cost of the server.
What Boyne is saying is BFBC2 does not give you this option. You are required to rent the server on a monthly basis, and cannot host your own on your own server box.

A lot of the having to rent servers comes from people running slush boxes, cheat boxes and getting suckered on to non-ranked boxes. The mods are great for the old game but people lost a lot of interest because of that, no vehicle servers, non-ranked servers, hacked or cheat servers, etc. EA wanted to make sure you would get a "good" server each and every time and also if they want their cross platform stuff to work eventually they have to have control. Guys the ages of getting everything you want for free is wayyyyy over. If the servers farms go away the game gets a whole lot more expensive and thus ending PC gaming quickly, if everyone involved can keep to their specialty and make a little dough then everyone is happy! We need to support a voice and game server business as a small boutique gaming OEM ourselves in order to keep our memory guys happy and then nvidia happy and so on. It is all cyclical, sorry to be the voice of reality. =P
